In taking a quick glance at the Google search update monitoring tools there has definitely been some major movement recently. Especially on January 29, 2013 all the tools show an increase in volatility of the search engine.

Mozcast shows almost a twenty degree increase on this day. Usually when the weather is this hot people start chattering. However, I didn’t hear any chatter about this.

serp metrics january 29 2013Serp Metrics shows the biggest Google flux happening in the past thirty days on January 29, 2013. Bing and Yahoo remained somewhat constant at this date.

serps com january 29 2013Serps.com also shows the biggest Google flux happening in the past thirty days on January 29, 2013. Something happened, but no one has talked about it.

The only mention from Google on this date was that Jade Wang said the Google Places / Local Listing in Google Maps changes are around the “verification and editing experience for users managing pages in Google+ (in the Local Business or Place category).” So this should not have affected Google search because this local update was for editing not for rankings.

>>> So let’s talk about it in the comments and figure out what happened on this date so everyone can understand.

Zebra Update Rumors

smiling zebraSo I have been hearing rumors about this Google zebra update. The ideas are absurd and this is being labeled as a spam update. I for one do not believe this update exists and think it is 100% a rumor from the Internet marketing community.

Rumor 1: Google is going to take a list of keywords like business, pay for service, click here and if your site has them it will be penalized.

Are you freaking kidding me? This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. You cannot just take a bunch of keywords and say hey these are spam so let’s penalize every site that uses them. As an example, I just used the word spam in this article and not in a spammy way. If Google chooses to target the word spam then my site will be penalized. Makes a lot of sense right? NO! The rumors of this update are absurd.

Rumor 2: You will have to pay a large sum of money for reinclusion

This goes against Google’s guidelines because you cannot pay to be in the organic search results. It is a free service with free listings. But, of course those results can be highly influenced from Internet marketing guys like me ;)
