Many changes have been noticed these past two days in Google search that have been hinting towards a Google update or big algorithmic change. The volatility numbers are up on Mozcast.
Wednesday February 27 Mozcast reports a temperature of 79.
Thursday February 28 Mozcast reports a temperature of 62.
New Websites
We have seen new websites be completely pushed back in the search results that were on page one and two of the Google search engine results pages. These websites ranked very highly before February 27 and they are only two months old. We know they will come back soon after Google cools down this update.
Thin Content
Very thin, less than minimal content websites have also been pushed back in the Google search engine results pages. However, this is no surprise as Google panda updates have been doing this for quite a while now.
Conclusion
These two things alone make me think this is a Google panda update or refresh. The characteristics mentioned above belong to panda updates not penguin.
Updated On March 4, 2013
As noted previously, I was expecting for rankings to come back as this fluxuation came to a rest. Yes the rankings did come back. In fact they came back stronger then before the update. There are some things I would like to note about the websites in question.
- The websites are using partial match brand domain names
- They have very little content – 250 words at most
- Inbound links are only coming from partial match brand links
- Websites target cities in the U.S.
- Domain is is 2 months
- All ranking in positions 1 thru 4 in Google search
